My wife has all the Strangers In Paradise trades, she treasures them. She also likes Transmetropolitan and Kabuki. I'll second her love for Transmet, but I never could get into Kabuki. To me it seemed more like an excuse to draw pretty pictures than to tell a story.

My comic book habit has definately been curbed recently. Anytime I spend less than 20 bucks on a trip to my LCS it's a victory.

I used to read a lot of magna, but now there's so much of it, I don't know where to start. It's kind of intimidating. I liked The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service, but there's 6 volumes of that and they cost around 20 a pop, so it's an expensive investment for something I'm not completely sold on.

Slightly guild related, how's the WoW comic? The writer, Walt Simonson, did probably the best Thor stories ever, so he's perfect for epic storytelling. I know he has to check with Blizzard to get script approval, but hopefully he's given some freedom to tell a good story.

I liked the WoW comics (subscribed for the first 12 issues then had to stop). I agree with you that Simonson did the best Thor stories ever. In fact, I think I have the first few issues of Thor he ever did kicking around somewhere...

The bust that comics had (crazily enough shortly before the boom of comic inspired movies started) was especially hard in my neck of the woods. There used to be comic shops in all the big malls in ND (which amounts to a whopping 4 :P ) as well as countless other smaller shops in most of the bigger towns, but when the bust hit they all went belly up. And when I say all I mean every single last one of them. I havnt been to a comic book store/shop for at least 10 years I bet. The only place now I can get any comics, in their regular or collected ed, is at the bookstores, many of which seem to be closing as well. Bismarck (the state capital) is the closest bigger town to me and there used to be a comic store there I loved going to, as well as 2 cool little bookstores and a Walden books in the mall, not a single one there now with just a Barnes and Noble to offer books. Its a little sad and probably one of the main reasons I slowly phased out my comic collecting :( I would love to spend a few hours rummaging through old comics at a comic store one more time heh :geek:

I could never get into kabuki... ironicly, i hated the artwork.
As for manga, most of it is printed in a smaller size than it used to be, priced between $7-$10 a volume now, so its easier on the wallet.
i remember the days when the first print of Akira came out.... $25 each.... god it hurt.
green is good.
blue is better.
purple is prodigiously phenomenally pleasing!

I found Hush and The Dark Knight Returns (I didnt have this one apparently) at Barnes and Noble a couple weeks ago and added em to my collection. Havnt had a chance to read them yet but that should change when I move to full time overnights at my job next month Overnights consist mainly of getting up every 30 mins and checking on the kids to make sure they havnt gone AWOL.........for about 6 hours, then 2 hours getting them up, having breakfast, and getting them off to work crews &/or school. Leaves a lot of somewhat free time, hopefully I dont catch too much guff from my co-workers for bringing in graphic novels ;)

Wasnt able to find any Astro City collections there but I'll keep checking back from time to time. I did see they have a mini-series thing with Marvel heroes as Zombies that I thought sounded...........interesting if nothing else lol

Hush is a great read with appearances from virtually everybody from the batman family, heros and villians included. It's just a solid, well told superhero story.

The Dark Knight Returns is unique. It might seem a little intimidating with all of the small panels on each page, but once you get into the flow of the story, you hardly notice it at all. Keep in mind it came out in the 80's and along with Watchmen is the bible for how to tell a mature superhero story. There's lots of subtle references to the threat of nuclear war and what Batman means as a symbol to people.
